Solar Resources
The amount of electricity that can be produced by a solar power facility depends directly on the amount of available sunlight and the efficiency of the solar cells in use. The total available solar resource, in turn, depends on the site's latitude as well as its average cloudiness and climate. In Europe, the intensity of solar radiation reaching the ground varies considerably by country, with the southern region receiving far more energy per square meter (Figure 1). However, as evidenced by the solar power market's dominant position in Germany and its significant presence in the Netherlands, even lesser amounts of available solar energy are more than adequate to provide a usable power supply.
