As we know, cars are expected to become the fourth-largest Internet terminal access after computers, mobile phones, TVs, which is the most important basis on which cars will enter e era. In European and American countries, 3G technology has been widely used in automotive multimedia systems. In the 3G era, cars as a possible future wireless Internet access terminal will use high-tech electronic technology and information communication networks to facilitate and comfort car owners’ life, which is the most important purpose of automakers.
Anyhow, this is only a beginning of auto e era. So China independent automakers have a chance to almost stand on the same starting line once again, just like the electric cars.
For China independent automakers, is it a chance, or a challenge?
As the 3G era, China’s car automakers are beginning to stride into the automotive e era. In May 2009, GAIG (Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group Co., Ltd.) Toyota Camry sedan was equipped with the world’s leading GBook smart copilot system, which marked the automakers are actively carrying out exploration and preparation in order to meet the 3G wireless Internet era,
Just in the following six months, General Motors, Honda, Chrysler and other auto giants, also announced that one of its cars will be added the e system.
At the same time, SAIC Volkswagen, FAW Toyota, DFM Nissan and other China auto giants are trying their best to develop and launch a real e-car on the base of Internet applications.
Although these active automakers only are oversea automakers or China joint ventures, they just began. So China independent brand automakers still have a good chance to enter even lead this auto segment market. Especially, China main telecommunications operators have begun to prepare for the cooperation plan with automakers.
In November 2009, in Guangzhou International Auto Show, China three major telecommunications operator (China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom) have showed their cooperation plans to closely integrate the communications capabilities within cars. China Mobile has also announced the new wireless application services based on cars early in December 2009.
But after all the wireless Internet access terminal technology of European and American automakers are more advanced than China automakers. So if china automakers want to catch up with them, they must pay more prices. At the same time, the wireless Internet access terminal technology is a real high-tech, so the R&D cost must be high, that is difficult for most of China independent brand automakers.
On the other hand, the new e-car must be expensive. As we know, the largest competitive advantage of China independent cars is low price. So this is another problem. So the auto e era is also real challenge for China independent cars.
