January 10, 2008 | Chris Morrison
frontpic1.jpgIt’s official: Green car madness has taken over. After seeing more electric and hybrid vehicle startups than we could keep track of, we finally decided to start keeping count.
We’ve compiled a list, below, of 27 (update: the list has reached 30; thanks for the comments) startups, listed according to their release date, with additional information on fuel type, range, top speed and price. Most haven’t yet taken venture funding, but where applicable, we’ve listed financial backing.
While we’ve got some overall favorites (Miles, Tesla, Think) and a few favorite oddballs (Aptera, Commuter Cars, Eliica), we’ve for the most part withheld judgement. Still, if you have any of your own predictions about which companies will succeed or — far more likely — fail, we’d encourage you to make them known in the comments.
A note on our method: While most manufacturers are planning more than one model, we chose the one that seemed either most commercially viable or closest to release, depending on our own (discretionary) formula. We didn’t included well-known consumer models like the Toyota Prius or Chevy Volt, or startups like AC Propulsion that only do battery conversions for consumer vehicles. We also rounded the price to the nearest thousand.
All details are taken from the companies, so we haven’t independently confirmed things like range and top speed details. In case we missed any, mention them below and we’ll add them to the list.
americanelectricvehicle.JPGAmerican Electric Vehicle — Kurrent
Update: Defunct, according to a comment below, although they seem to still be for sale. We’re looking into it.
AEV advises its potential drivers to “Slow down,” which seems like wise advice, given the golf cart-inspired design. Still, it’s ridiculously cheap.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $10K
Range / top speed: 40 miles / 25mph
Release date: Available now
commutercars.jpgCommuter Cars — Tango T600
The Tango is even odder than three-wheeled designs, in some ways: It’s less than half the width of a normal car, and two can fit in a single lane. It also accelerates like a bat out of hell. Future versions are planned to be much cheaper, and have longer ranges.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $108K
Range / top speed: 80 miles / 150mph
Funding: Less than $1 million in angel backing; open to venture funding.
Release date: Available now
dynasty.JPGDynasty Electric Car Corp. — IT Sedan
This Canadian company actually sells five different models, although they all look relatively identical, minus or plus a few pieces of frame.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $19,000
Range / top speed: 30 miles / 24mph
Release date: Available now
elbil.jpgElBil Norge — Kewet Buddy
Somewhat reminiscent of the Think (see below), the Buddy is currently only available in the same country, Norway.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $28K
Range / top speed: / 56mph
Release date: Available now
flybo.jpgFly Bo — 6000 / 2
This vehicle, which bears a strong resemblance to the Smart Car, is produced in China. Spark (see below) distributes it in the United States.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $10K
Range / top speed: 60 miles / 35mph (w/ limiter)
Release date: Available now
geme2.jpgGlobal Electric Motorcars (GEM) — e2
GEM is actually a division of Chrysler, the company has the look and feel (not to mention, apparently, the limited funding) of a startup. Its vehicles resemble golf carts, and are likely used for many of the same functions.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $7K
Range / top speed: 35 miles / 25mph
Release date: Available now
modec.JPGModec — Electric Van
These aren’t actually cars, or even consumer transportation. These electric van / trucks resemble the delivery vehicles you might see bringing vegetables to your local grocery.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $41K
Range / top speed: 100 miles / 50mph
Release date: Available now
myers.JPGMyers Motors — NmG (No more Gas)
Another three-wheeled design, with room for only one passenger. Odd-looking and doesn’t go far, but you can order one today, if you like.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $35K
Range / top speed: 30 miles / 75mph
Release date: Available now
reva.JPGReva — G-Wiz
Despite its distinction as the most-produced electric vehicle around, having been in production since 2001, the Indian-produced Reva isn’t available yet in the United States. It’s considered extremely unsafe at high speeds, so it may never make it over.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: £8K ($16K in US dollars)
Range / top speed: 70 miles (for 2008 model) / 45mph
Release date: Available now
smithev.JPGSmith Electric Vehicles — Edison
The Edison, a large van designed for local deliveries, is Smith’s smallest model, meaning drivers don’t need a special license to operate it. The company, based in the United Kingdom also makes several much larger delivery trucks.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: Unconfirmed
Range / top speed: 150 miles / 50mph
Release date: Available now
twike.JPGTwike — The Twike
Some effort seems to have been put towards making this vehicle look like an insect. Of course, the look worked for the Volkswagen Beetle, and it may be working for Twike; the company sold out its 2007 line last year. It’s based in Switzerland, but sells in several other countries, including the United States.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $27,500
Range / top speed: 80 miles / 53mph
Release date: Available now
venturi.JPGVenturi — Fetish
Another high-end electric sports car, the Fetish is manufactured in Monaco. High labor costs, anyone? The company is also developing two more models, the Ecletic and Astrolab.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: €297K (about $435K dollars)
Range / top speed: 155 miles / 100mph
Release date: Available now
zap.JPGZap! Electric Cars — Xebra Sedan
Update: While Zap! cars really do exist, the company appears to have made itself out to be much more than it is. Check out the Wired.com expose piece on Zap, and think twice before ordering one (or signing up to be a dealer).
We chose to list the Xebra because the two higher-powered versions Zap is working on, the Zap-X and the Alias, don’t have firm release dates. Zap also has numerous retail locations in the United States, and sells cars made by other manufacturers.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $11K
Range / top speed:
Release date: Available now
zenn1.jpgZenn Motors — Zenn NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle)
As with some other available electric vehicles currently available, this vehicle is strictly for short ranges and slow speeds.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $12K – $15K
Range / top speed: 35 miles / 25mph
Funding: This company is publicly traded on the TSX.
Release date: Available now
lightning.JPGLightning Car Company — Lightning GT
The United Kingdom’s answer to Tesla. This will likely remain a boutique vehicle, but the company has plans for cheaper mass-produced models later.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: £150K ($293K in US dollars)
Range / top speed: 250 miles / TBA (but fast)
Release date: First half 2008
sparkev.jpgSpark Electric Vehicles — Comet
Update: Like Zap (see above), it seems Spark is either a scam company or simply incapable of carrying out its plans. Michael Papp, the brain behind Spark, has been arrested and faces trial for taking payments for vehicles he failed to deliver.
Spark has nine models, most made by Fly Bo (listed above). Here, we list the one they designed and manufactured themselves in the United States (most of their vehicles are much slower and cheaper than this one). They distribute their vehicles in Colorado, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $33K
Range / top speed: 200 miles / 90mph
Release date: First half of 2008
tesla.JPGTesla Motors — The Roadster
The most-publicized, most-hyped electric car company around. Tesla’s high-performance electric vehicle is reportedly a blast to drive, but various production problems have set the release date back.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $98K
Range / top speed: 221 miles / 125mph
Funding: Backed by Bay Area Equity Fund, Compass Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Technology Partners, VantagePoint Cleantech Partners, and VantagePoint Venture Partners, as well as various angel investors (including Elon Musk).
Release date: First quarter 2008
think.JPGThink — City
A pre-existing company whose older cars are still driven in Norway, this European manufacturer will release its new model in Europe this year, and in the United States a year or two after. Business 2.0 had an extensive story on the company.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $34K in Norway, $15K – $17K in US (projected)
Range / top speed: 112 miles / 62mph
Funding: Backed by DFJ Element, British Hazel Capital, Canica, Capricorn Investment Group, CG Holding, RockPort Capital Partners and Wintergreen Advisers, as well as various angels.
Release date: First half 2008 in Europe, but not until 2009 or later in the US
phoenix.jpgPhoenix Motorcars — Sport Utility Truck / SUV
No cars here, just trucks and SUVs. The company will have an extended-range battery option for 250 miles later in 2008.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $45K
Range / top speed: 130 miles / 95mph
Release date: Mid-2008
aircar.JPGMoteur Developpment International — The Air Car
These tiny, odd little vehicles are powered entirely by compressed air. You won’t be likely to see one Stateside just yet, but India’s Tata Motors has plans to begin production on them this year.
Fuel type: Air!
Price: TBA
Range / top speed: 120 miles / 70mph
Release date: 2008 (month TBA)
porteon10.pngPorteon — Porteon
Reportedly to be sold alongside houses in small Mexican communities. Like other companies, this one plans to roll out higher-speed models later, but they haven’t gotten back to us yet with more details, including the official name.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $7K – $9K
Range / top speed: TBA / 25mph
Release date: 2008 (month TBA)
spyder.JPGUniversal Electric Vehicles — Spyder
UEV’s Spyder has a sporty design, but the company itself doesn’t seem as slick and polished as some of the competitors. We’re not sure whether that means anything, though.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $70K
Range / top speed: 150 miles / 100+mph
Release date: 2008 (month TBA)
aptera.JPGAptera — Typ-1e / Type-1h
The Aptera Typ-1 is a three-wheeler (two front, one back) available in two configurations. We’ve covered the vehicle here.
Fuel type: All-electric or hybrid, depending on configuration
Price: $27K electric, $30K hybrid
Range / top speed: 120 miles electric, 600 miles hybrid; top speed TBA
Funding: Backed by Idealab and an angel investor, the CEO of Esenjay Petroleum, Michael Johnson.
Release date: Late 2008
obvio.JPGObvio — 828e
Sold in the United States by Zap, the diminutive but high-powered Obvio could almost race a Tesla. It’s designed and manufactured by a Brazilian company that is also working on a cheap combustion engine version.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $49k
Range / top speed: 240 miles / 120 mph
Release date: Late 2008 or early 2009
fisker.JPGFisker Automotive — “Eco-Chic” (Working name TBA)
Fisker will be showing off the first productions models of its cars on January 13th, at the Detroit Auto Show. Created by a world-renowned auto designer, these will compete in Tesla’s high-end market niche.
Fuel type: Hybrid
Price: $80K
Range / top speed: 620 miles / TBA
Backing: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has invested more than $10 million in Fisker.
Release date: Mid-2009
flytheroad.JPGVenture Vehicles — VentureOne e50 / Q100 / EV
We previously suggested that some might call this vehicle a “glorified scooter.” The company does have supporters, though, who gave us plenty of heat — for a chuckle, check out the comment thread below our story. The three models listed are actually one car with different configurations.
Fuel type: Two hybrids, the e50 and Q100, and the all-electric EV
Price: $20K – 25K
Range / top speed: e50, Q100 and EV respectively: 350 miles / 100mph; 300 miles / 120mph; 120 miles / 75mph
Backing: Backed by NGEN Partners.
Release date: Second quarter 2009
miles.JPGMiles Electric Vehicles — XS500
Founded in 2004, this company already makes and sells two low-speed electric vehicles which are manufactured in China. We chose to list details for its upcoming highway-speed model, which should have a mass market appeal, if the price is low enough.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: TBA
Range / top speed: 120 miles / 80mph
Release date: 2009 (month TBA)
Bonus: Concept cars
We’ve picked out a few companies that represent next-generation thinking in EVs. As noted below, there are many more.
eliica.JPGEliica (The Electric Lithium-Ion Car)
A concept car created by Keio University in Japan, the Eliica has an odd eight-wheeled design and has come close to breaking speed records for combustion-engine cars. The team plans to sell a couple hundred eventually.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: $255K
Range / top speed: TBA / 230mph
velozzi.JPGVelozzi
An X-Prize contestant, Velozzi is most notable for claiming that their car will have a 0-60mph acceleration of under 3 seconds. Other details are pretty thin, though.
Fuel type: Hybrid
Price: TBA
Range / top speed: TBA / 200mph
wrightspeed.JPGWrightspeed — X-1
Wrightspeed admits that its scarily fast prototype is unsafe, and will never be mass-produced. The company is planning a commercial model with the same high performance, but hasn’t given any real details yet.
Fuel type: All-electric
Price: Probably high
Range / top speed: <100 miles / 112mph w/ electronic limiter (but it’s still in first gear when it hits that speed)
There’s also the Automotive X-Prize competitor list, which had grown to 45 teams at last count — a few of which are included on this list, but many not. Most are concept cars.
Favorites? Least favorites? Think they’ll all fail horribly? Speak your piece.

Tesla Motors is a company looking to produce a high-performance electric sports car, and is backed by a number of high-profile investors. Introduced in June 2006 to the public complete with a test drive by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Tesla Roadster is able to go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds (competitive with Porsche and Lamborghini models), while also delivering 100 miles per gallon (double the efficiency of the Toyota Prius). The car's base price is around $100,000, and orders for the car in 2008 are full per teslamotors.com as of December 2007.
Among Tesla's investors include Silicon Valley luminaries like Paypal founder Elon Musk and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.«Less

Wrightspeed is an early-stage, privately funded Silicon Valley-based start-up company. We’re defining a new market segment for high-end sports cars – road cars with both extreme performance (0 – 60 mph in ~3 seconds, 0-100 in ~7 seconds) and extreme energy efficiency (150+ mpg equivalent). Our core technology is in the electric drive train: motor control, motors, battery systems, driver interface. Because we believe driving is an experience, we put this technology in a high-end design package. Heads turn when the X1 prototype is driven down the street. Wrightspeed builds extreme performance electric supercars. With advanced electric drive train technology, our cars raise the performance driving experience to a new level – while still returning 3 times better energy efficiency than the most efficient cars available. Wrightspeed is building the X1, demonstrable today in a street-legal prototype, using lithium-ion batteries and a 3-phase electric motor.«Less

If Modec are listed here, we can surely include the world's bigges maker of all-electric roadgoing delivery vehicles - Smith EV. Around 250 of their current range were delivered in 2007, mainly to logistics companies. 1500 are scheduled for delivery in 2008, 5000 next year and at least twice that in 2010. See htt://www.smithelectricvehicles.com

lets make a good looking car for half the current low prices of 70,000. better yet make it under 30 k.
What these vehicles cost to run will be hard to figure unless you have a seperate electric meter for the car only.

How about the Twike (http://www.twike.com)? It's a small electric or electric-hybrid (pedal power!) vehicle, made in Switzerland, I think. You can get them here, too, if you pre-order. They have fairly impressive ranges and speeds, if memory serves, and a very different control system (control stick, vaguely reminiscent of a helicopter's.

I hate that more than 50% of those care look like Toy cars. This thing will take off when they make SUV sized electric cars, that's what the american crowd is used to, the Electric-Suv, the electric honda civic, the electric toyota corolla, that's what people would buy, not a moped.

hybrid SUV's with generators instead of banks of batteries are possible now. can you imagine a Suburban pulling a boat while getting 100 mpg. It's the same technology that allows trains to move cargo for under 50 cents per mile per ton and they'v e been doing it for decades. Ice breakers are another example of long range powerful transportation using generators feeding AC motors. We could do the same for semi trucks, dramatically increasing mileage, range and reducing maintenence.

Phoenix Motors using the Altair Nano (ALTI) Battery is the one most likely to succeed for the mass market. This Nano engineered Lithium Ion battery has a life expectency of 15-20 years- works in all kind of extreme temps and will not catch fire or explode.

What appeals to me is the 10 minute recharge time claimed for the "future" ZAP electric car (stock symbol: ZAAP). With 350 mile range, 0 to 60 in about 4.8 seconds as I recall, in-wheel electric engines using "pulsed capacitor discharge" technology (finally! this tech has been ignored in the usa since it was invented by Edwin V. Gray 1975!), and something like 600 horsepower, with 155 mph top speed, seating 5 or six adults, body by Lotus, the only thing I dont like is the price, around $65,000 or so, and its not available yet. This thing is (or will be) way overengineered, hopefully ZAP will work to fill in the gap between its current toy-type models, or retrofit some of them with some of the new tech, to increase range and top speed. Need around 80 mph top speed i think, ideally 100 mph. 10 minute recharge. High marks for nailing the top end, at least in the future..! (body by Lotus Engineering..!) Due date maybe 2010.

The GEM Cars (Global Electric Motorcars, Chrysler) are far more than a golf cart. GEM is the leader in production of NEVs Worldwide with more than adequate funding. As a matter of fact they do not require funding from Chrysler as the production and sales fund the entire GEM production facility. 2008 marks their 10th year in business. These vehicle are not competing for the highways. They are produced for use in gated communities, factories, inter-city, or any roadways where the maximum speed limit is 35 MPH. They come in 7 different configuartions, 2, 4, 6 passenger and utility versions. The GEM is a total electric plug-in.

The GEM looks too much like a golf cart. Add the fact that all the accessories requred to make it an all weather vehicle means a $16k price and the Miles ZX40S looks like a better deal. The Miles ZX40S looks more like a real car, the doors lock, and it has twice the range of the GEM. http://www.milesev.com/

5 Reasons to Buy an Electric Car
1. Zero Air Pollution
ZAP stands for Zero Air Pollution. We believe electricity is the fuel of the future. With electricity to power our transportation, our world can tap into renewable resources like hydroelectric, solar, wind, or geothermal power; resources that lessen our environmental footprint. Furthermore, studies show that millions of electric vehicles can recharge at night using existing surplus electrical generation; a vast, virtually untapped resource.
2. Save Gas
Gasoline is a precious natural resource and vital to the world economy. ZAP vehicles use no gasoline and require no oil changes. Using less fossil fuel can help relieve our current energy shortages while ensuring that future generations can rely on the same inexpensive, useful, petroleum products that we all take for granted.
3. Save Money
Gas keeps getting more expensive. Imagine all the money you can save by ZAPPING to work every day, rather than driving your gas vehicle. The typical electric car costs a penny per mile versus ten cents per mile with gas. Electric bikes and scooters are even less expensive. Plus, electric motors have fewer moving parts, meaning fewer trips to the mechanic. If you live close to work, you can save thousands of dollars per year by replacing your car with a ZAP bicycle.
4. Save Time
Traffic congestion and parking shortages eat away at our busy days, but a ZAP vehicle can help you save time, especially in busy urban areas. ZAP bikes and scooters slice through traffic jams and finding a place to park your ZAP neighborhood car is a snap.
5. Help the Economy
Today, the majority of USA's foreign trade deficit is attributed to imported oil. Using a ZAP vehicle will reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Furthermore, by investing in advanced transportation technologies, the USA can take the technological lead in offering energy efficient products that emerging economies around the world can use to build their own transportation infrastructures.

Are these companies really sound investments? How many of these companies will survive? The big auto makers have been fine tuning prototypes in the wings for years now and will introduce them when the time seems right. They also buy models from these little companies and dissect the technology and put it into their own designs. I think the power cell technology companies are a better investment.

The GEM's haven't changed much in the 10 years they've been around. The hard doors that are an (expensive) option are POS. they haven't changed them since 2002. I even spoke with a call center rep that admited they sucked but gem wasn't going to spend money on retooling them. ??? My other beef with the one i own is that although they are street legal on 35mph roads or slower they do not belong there. even on roads that are 25mph how many big cars really go 25 on the nose? Other than your grandmother... no one. Until there is a reasonable solution i'll stick to the 4/gallon gas.

I will gladly pay $50k for a electric vehicle since it will cost only a couple thousand more to run it a year and for repairs. With the gas prices where they are now it would cost me about 8 - 10 thousand dollars more a year to operate a gas powered truck that is gonna cost me $40,000 anyways.
What a concept a truck or car that pays for itself in less then 10 years! And a 10 minute home charger. I can charge while eating lunch or when I return to the office.
As a businessman in a service industry, it will give me a huge advantage over my competitors. In a rural area I put on alot of miles each day. And what better way to promote my electrical business then in an electric truck/suv?
Im ordering a Phoenix today. They appear to have all the goodies of any other modern truck / SUV minus the convenient refilling stations in each and every town.
Todays Lithium batteries dont have a memory like Nicads. The Phoenix claims a battery life of 250k miles i think and many others claim 100k. Some people fight change even when they are the only ones left in the cave i swear.

maximum RPM. This

I see alot of comments about the benefits that an electric car brings for the environment. I think its important to note that these cars would cause alot of pollution. With the majority of our electricity coming from coal, these electric cars far from ecologically friendly. They are really only a band aid solution. Thats the reason why the original electric cars were taken off the market. Until we have renewable sources of electricity these cars are just as bad as gas powered vehicles. Might as well wait for hydrogen powered vehicles. Ill take gasoline emissions over coal ones.

@ David Jeffrey - actually when you do well to wheel analysis of the different types of vehicles (meaning the CO2 emissions from manufacturing through the CO2 emissions of the lifetime operations of the vehicles) Electric Vehicles and Plug In hybrids are still far more efficient than entirely gas based alternatives. There is some great information and charts here.

So... to sum it all up... freeway legal/capable electric cars currently available in the US for under $25k? Zero.
NEV is not legal (nor appropriate) for my commute on 45mph roads. Have driven the Zap Xebra and it's promising but scary cheap feeling. Myers Sparrow remake is ridiculously overpriced (though their suspension and electronics improvements are great having driven both). The rest are all pipe-dreams or expensive one-offs.
The Reva has the most promise (and is actually making a dent in London) but is just simply not available here.
You might was to add AC Propulsion. Even though they'll likely never make a production tzero, their eBox Scion conversions are interesting.

Is there some sort of unwritten rule that all electric cars have to be god-awful ugly? The only ones with any style are overpriced to a fault. In fact, it appears that the manufactures are going out of their way to make these cars ugly and top heavy. What gives?
I only thing I can think of is that they are letting the mechanical engineers do the design of the cars. Engineers have no style, just look how they dress. Hire some people with at least a little imagination to design the outside of these vehicles please........I can spot an electric from a mile away just because of their ugliness.

I would think again about putting ZAP! on there. The company has a history of writing press releases about products it's releasing and then never delivers. For example, it announced the arrival of Worldcar in 2003, Smart ForTwo in 2004, Obvio and Xebra in 2005, Xebra Truck in 2006, ZAP Truck XL and ZAP-X in 2007, and in Alias in the January of this year. Of those cars, only the Xebra and Xebra truck ever made it to market. You also don't have the range of the Xebra listed, but according to Ehab Youssef, a dealer for ZAP, the car barely makes it to 35 mph and has a range less than 20 miles. Doesn't sound like it's going to be taking over the road anytime soon. And those dealers across the country you mention, well they're fling a class action lawsuit against the company.

I think the Indian air car has the most potential. With all battery cars you have a massive, expensive and heavy battery bank. The air powered car has an on board compressor and carbon fiber tanks and they sell a compressor for the home.
It can be charged up in a few minutes at home and you never have to worry about running out of power and getting stuck away from home without a plug. If you run out of air just run the battery powered compressor much like a hybrid for enough power to get back home. Its light weight and decent specs fall at the top end of the electrics and its cheaper. I have seen a crash test and it held up better than some full size cars.

Your comment about ZAP is totally unfounded. It was clearly a one sided hit piece. Who else has delivered over 700 city speed vehicles? Who else has a dealer network of over 50 outlets? Who else has delivered over 100,000 EV's? Most of the ZAP dealers believe that the XEBRA is the most practical electric car for the money. Check out any of their dealers, such as Foreign Affairs in Florida, Midwest EV in Kansas, or their other dealers across the country.
oh... if you are considering getting an EV or becoming a EV dealer, you should first visit ZAP, and see for yourself why this is the EV of choice.

These car companies will all fail miserably b/c of the price. it's ridiculously expensive! People want an affordable car (cheap) alternative to current gas guzzling vehicles. People want to feel like they're beating the "man" and big oil, spending 40k for a rinky dink little overpriced Ford Fiesta is lucicrous. These car companies should join forces and stop being small inept companies who can't compete with the big oil babies. After seeing this list, the first thing I thought of was Linux. It's like 100+ different distributions, every one of them wanting the same result, being an alternative choice.

I am one of the men "taken" by Spark-EV. We (Electric Transportation of Arkansas) gave this Michael Papp thousands for nothing! This man has no manufacturing facilities. He is not building a Comet, he is not crash testing them in his basement. And he will not deliver on any order you place with him. He is scamming people from his house. We have had the pleasure of visiting his home twice now and have not seen any electric car production going on.
One car company not listed above is Cruise Car. We are a dealer for them and are happy with their products.
Zap has a good song and dance, but they are in it for the money, from dealers or the public, dosen't matter they just want money! And have only their best interest in mind.

Until the EV manufacturers drop the prices down to the 10k range, only a small portion of drivers will be helping the enviroment. Why make cars for a select few and not the masses? By selling millions more vehicles (at a lower price point) will yield more revenue versus selling only a few thousand (paying 4x as much) to a select few that can afford them.

As most of us know, electric cars have been around for years. My wife grew up in northeast Ohio and had a neighbor who drove around in an electric car in the 1960s. Our big three domestic automakers started losing the market in the 70s and 80s because they refused to build quality cars. I remember seeing a new car on the show room floor with a rust spot on the bumper in 1967. I don't believe they have gotten the message even today and so most new automotive technology will have to come from foreign companies.

I have been following electric cars since 1980. I never owned or built one like some of my friends did. Now that there are so many new cars on the market and pending I think the time has come for the utilities and the government to fully back them with the right laws legislation etc. The government needs to mandate a percentage of zero emission cars and offer tax breaks necessary to the consumers. The nation an the world requires an electric tariff based on electric battery dispatability. The reward is a discounted electric tariff which provides the consumer annual electric cost savings. The electric vehicle/storage tariff must be mandated for all utilities nation wide by the FERC and federal law.

I've read about these electric cars that get between 100 to 200 miles on a charge, which isn't bad with a price tag of $80,000 to $100,000. Also some of these use a gas powered alternator to charge the batteries while driving, so what I was wondering is, why can't you put an alternator on each wheel axle and use that to charge the batteries, while on the go???

RE: ZAP
Regarding ZAP, Your readers have had the wool pulled over their eyes by some EV marketers that are looking to discredit ZAP in the eyes of the public, media, investors and dealers, while they put together their own knock-off business plan.
ZAP did sell about 20 Worldcars, but the market was slow and the supplies were limited. We sold a vehicle we called the intimidator (see Kurrent), but the price was too expensive with very few sales. We sold over 300 2004 Smart ForTwos before we had to cancel the business for reasons beyond our control. OBVIO is supposed to be a car manufacturer in Brazil who pledged to deliver models in 2008. Obviously they've had some sort of problem, but we will sell them if they are available. The Xebra has been selling since June 2006, so I don't know where you got your info. The ZAP XL Truck is due later this year, according to our announced plans. The ZAP Alias was never said by ZAP to be available in January 2008. How could we announce plans in July 2007 to build the Alias, then deliver it in January. Our projection is 2nd quarter 2009.
If you have any experience in EVs, you would know that ZAP has been selling electric bicycles, scooter, motorcycles, ATVS, now the Xebra, as well as many, many others (over 100,000 EVs delivered) since 1994.
ZAP is a public company which submits to quarterly audits and is a fully SEC reporting company.
Oh, and I own and drive a Xebra and have gone 40 MPH and have driven up to 27 miles on a charge and still have juice left.
Quit trying to badmouth ZAP. Everyone must think starting a car company is easy. Call me if you don't believe me.

Maybe I'm missing something very obvious as a novice, looking at electric car comparisons for the first time, but what the heck good is a car that has a 30 mile range or goes only 25 mph, or costs 70k, 80k, or 400k. Unless I'm missing something huge, NONE of these is really going to solve the energy problems, the gas price problems or the pollution problems in the world because either A. no one can afford these, or B. there low speed or low range makes them useless.
Not to be a criticizing voice, but I just don't get it......

In about 8 years a new electric car company will be born with more technology and a car will be produced that is luxurios and sporty, this vehicle will be able to travel distances of up to 400+ miles. It will beat out Tesla due to tesla company laziness and will catch the eye of anyone looking for a new vehcile. The first car will be expensive in the 90,000 dollar region.
Believe me you will see the "Df"

RENEVABLE ENERGY
THERMOVOLTAIK - CURRENT FROM WARMTH
ADD THERMAL GENERATORS (Addition-thermocouple-voltage) - Decentralized current supply for each household.
Thermovoltaik, the environmentally friendly technology
thermo-generators for power supply are efficient compact with energy concentrated in a small volume. With an efficiency of 48% the transformation of heat into electrical energy is very cost-effective. Additionally, by the stored heat of the generator only the quantity of fuel has to be supplied, a well-isolated generator housing normally delivers as a heat loss to the environment.
The Thermovoltaik is the work area of physics that deals with the conversion of thermal energy into electrical energy. If two different metals are together contacted and heated a voltage electricity with relatively high levels develops.
An Thermo generator consists of several thermo cells in row as laminar contacted thin film coatings forming a pillar block.
A thermo cell is made of several thin film coatings of different materials. If heat is added to a thermo pillar block by the additive method the total voltage the sum of all individual cells.
The output power derives from the general tensions, the size of the cell surfaces (ampere / mm ²),and the temperature the amount supplied.
The electric power is linear proportional to the generator temperature.
The thermal energy supply is compatible with all fuel types. Through power-heat-coupling, biogas, solar radiation with thermal and photovoltaic cells, solar power, hydrogen or geothermal energy.
The compact design of the generators are the diverse applications, ranging from cardiac pacemakers to megawatt power plants in the industry, household, air, sea or space.
A high current inverter, DC / AC inverter converts DC power of the generators in to AC power.
This inverter of unconventional design, is applicable in miniature size for circuit boards for electronics or as inverter for passage of extremly high current for consumer of megawatt power and is applicable to all DC sources.
The additive method also offers new applications in sensor technology with higher sensitivities. High electricity generator and inverter patent DE 43 13 827 A1.
These offers are still in development stage. For more information please see my homepage.

Many are trying their best not to hinder anymore our environment. I would also like to help. As a Reverend and working as a courier for some banks, I travel into many cities, covering almost 200 miles every day; that is, over 4,500 miles each month. How can I advertise to these communities the importance of buying this fuel efficient, hybrid cars? What would be your suggestion?

The best way to get the most EVs out there is to have a program for lower cost, roomy enough for the single parent that has to cart a couple of kids around as well as commute to work. I happen to be one and I cannot even afford the supposed MOTE $25,000 vehicle because I still need my currnet ICE vehicle for long trips a dozen or so times a year. The other "bubble shaped" vehicles do not have enough room for the kids with their backpacks and other "stuff" kids need for school or activites. With the announcement of the G-8 initiative it looks like such a program will not be offered by the Federal governement. A handful of $100k+ Tesla's or other Electric sports cars is not really going to help the CO2 emmisions issue fast enough. When are these builders with the DEEP pockets going to ban together and really take on this challange?

Wow... your slanted review of the Aptera Type1 does not serve the "Clean Tech" title of your publication what-so-ever. What a lousy review for such a revolutionary machine. Just goes to show that if the aesthetics don’t please the reviewers eye (Chris Morris)- then it becomes apparent that the reviewer is short on conversation topics- and is lacking sufficient knowledge required for an informed conversation on the subject. Kinda makes you wonder how Mr. Morrison got the job in the first place. Folks do you’re own research on this vehicle since Mr Morrison failed to do his. It blows the competition out of the water. I have no interest in the company what-so-ever, I just know a clean machine when I see one and I take offense at Mr. Morrison's poor taste and his failure of duty as a writer to provide his audience with real information.

Barry B. I clicked on your link and I noticed it indicated a high speed vehicle coming in mid 2009. Care to elaborate a little bit? I'm with Tom (above) as far as needing more than what an NEV can give. I am in a suburb vs city where speed limits are more like 40 to 55 mph for 70 to 80 % of my daily driving.

A fundamental change in our driving habits is now required.
The Automobile Industry is going to be in the same position as the Airline Industry in the next few months. Unless we get away from gas combustion vehicles, including Hybrids, the automobile industry (as we know it) will die.We need to make drastic moves. America needs to move to ELECTRIC. The vehicles are not as fast, not always as fun to drive, but the move will save Americans money (Billions) and help bring change to our automotive companies. Let's "Be Green"!!!!!!!!!!!! BG Automotive Group Ltd. has a car that will travel 80-100 miles per charge for $15,995. Finally a car that most Americans can afford. Did you know that 80% of all drivers, drive less than 50 miles per day? This new car will cost an equivalent of $0.20-0.25 cents/gallon (depending on electricity rates in your area). Why send $700 Billion per year to OPEC (now buying up U.S. companies) when we can use this money for our schools, health care, social security for all Americans, etc, etc, etc. We can make the difference if WE change.

Barry B. You are preaching to the choir about the changes needed and how many miles per day are traveled BUT, based on where I live and the available routes to a from work, I cannot use a N.E.V. that can only go 25 - 35 MPH only. So my only choices right now are to find a used car to be "Converted" to electric or think about getting a Funny Looking Three wheeler. However, the Three Wheeler would not allow me to use it for Kids related travel (still under the 50 Miles Per Day). So with a Three Wheeler I would be more dependent on the I.C.E. vehicle more than I want to be.
I hope that your faster vehicle works out soon and can be in a reasonable price range for most people. Once again, The best way to efect these changes are to get the most amount of these vehicles out there in all areas, not just the cities, for more people to see them and start thinking "I could use an Electric Car too".

Jay's comment (see June 25th) hit the nail on the head. I don't see a current product out there that achieves the two main things that most everyone wants -) A viable alternative to the wallet draining, environment killing machines we drive now, but also is affordable and doesn't look like an expanded golf cart that can't get up to a decent speed, or if it can, looks like a death trap on the freeway. I think we will all have to get use to smaller, perhaps less appealing means of transportation in the future. But if these EV companies want to really mass market their products, they cannot ignore the basic needs of safety and passenger requirements of the typical American family (see Tammy and Bill's comments on July 9). To the credit of many of the companies that have been mentioned, there seems to be some promising things for the future. But prototypes and promises of future delivery dates doesn't help us now. And it's seems like we have the technology to solve our problem. Tesla seems to have a fast, longer lasting EV, but the high price is way beyond most peoples means. And companies like Zap seem to have some good affordable things coming out soon. But based on some recent bad press, they will need to deliver as promised to prove the doubters wrong.
Maybe you've heard this before, but let's keep saying it over and over if we have to - we must find ways to reduce our dependence on oil! Our nations economy will surely improve and so will our environment!

In the future, global companies will come together to offer multiple options to everyone around the world. Few transportation options are:
1. Electric Trains (requires government to develop infrastructure)
2. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus (UTC power has good progress on these...already available)
4. Fuel Cell Vehicle (Honda is leasing them right now)
3. Electric Scooters and Motorcycles (already available for cheap price is India and China)
4. Electric vehicles (the most popular transportation in the future...with integrated wind and solar power)
5. Compressed Air power (a good and cheap option)
6. Natural Gas (there is already a Civic for sell that runs on natural gas)
7. Solar Cars (a dead option for future, requires major technology improvement)
8. Hybrids are going to be popular for next 10 years
9. A used ICE gasoline cars are good option for middle to lower economical class of people.
10. WAIT, WAIT AND WAIT...it is still not practical to buy any of these yet!

America needs to stay FOCUSED, AWARE and EDUCATED.
Focus:
History reminds us that every time oil prices peak and the North American market/consumers start to discuss alternative energy sources, the oil exporting countries start to trim down their prices. History also tells us that the oil exporting nations have been very successful in the past and in fact, we have lost our enthusiasm and dropped many of our alternative energy initiatives after oil prices are reduced.
WE need to stay focused this time.
1) Al Gore and his energy initiative is on course.
2) T. Boone Pickens and his wind power initiative is on course.
3) The BG Automotive Group mass production electric vehicle program is on
course along with renewable solar energy charging option.
4) Richard Branson from the UK is on course w/his environmental programs..
5) The Gas Reduction Act of 2008 might not be the most environmentally sound
solution, but yet it shows that Congress has finally realized that we have an
energy crisis (again), and a real threat to our national security.
The continued dependence on foreign oil is a threat to our long term democratic values. We must become an energy independent nation, and with this, some sacrifices will have to be made by the American consumer.
Be aware!!
We are exporting approximately USD $700 Billion dollars per year of U.S. currency. The majority of this money is being transferred to the Trillion dollar “sovereign wealth funds”. This is USD $700 Billion not being spent on America’s educational system, health care and security.
The “sovereign wealth funds” are directly buying major interests (large blocks of stock) in U.S. companies, including most of the major banks. Also, billions of dollars of “sovereign wealth fund” money is being invested in our hedge funds, private equity firms, and the investment banking industry. A few of these firms are directly and indirectly investing large sums of money into our “gas combustion” automobile industry. Do we want our auto industry in the direct or indirect control of the firms that are supplying us oil? This is an interesting topic for an investigative reporter.
There are automotive consulting companies in Michigan (heart of our auto industry), lobbying States and our Federal Government, NOT to subsidize the Electric Vehicle industry. The latter seems to be contradictory to what the American public would like to see from our automobile industry. After the billions (excess of $20 billion) the automotive companies have lost in the past 6 months producing gas combustion vehicles, you would think they too would change course. Changing course is not adding 2-4 miles per gallon w/Hybrids. Drastic measures in our auto industry must take place and NOW!
Do not let the temporary reduction in oil prices push us off course….AGAIN.
Educated:
Read, Read- Stay on top of the issues. Let’s not be fooled again.
STAY FOCUSED, AWARE and EDUCATED!

Nice speech BG. I think most of us looking at this web page are already Focused but let's look at what will make the greater change. A bunch of small comapnies creating one or two seater cars will not create the fast change. Remember, an EV will be an Extra Vehicle that will need to be insured with registration fees and taxes as additional costs to people (along with current increasing costs for everything else). People's personal pocket books will take a priority over the Greater good (the environment). This is why I suggested before that a group of you EV builders combine your resources to create something better than just a bunch of one seater/three wheeler vehicles in order to get more EVs on the roads quicker and at a more affordable price.
Another aspect is that the majority of people want to know that there is a substantial company that will stand behind its product and be there for any problems down the road. One of these three wheeler companies only pass on the 12-month warranties for all of the parts yet charge over $30k for thier vehicle (that seats ONE) stating that this is the average price of most vehicles purchased today. I did not get an answer to my question to them - "The average vehicles purchased for $30k usually come with a minumum warranty of 3 yrs or 36,000 miles - why doesn't yours?". Your website doesn't give very much information to us tow know the looks or specs of your vehicles, cost of your vehicles, warranty inforamtion, who youa rea and what is your backing to know if you will be around 10 years from now,.....

American Consumer [Moderator] 2 years ago
I have a simple question to all EV makers out there. Which of you wants to be a TRILLIONAIRE? If the answer is you, then read this carefully. What I am about to give you is your blueprint for success. I am going to tell you what American consumers want in an EV. This will save you millions on research costs in addition to the trillions you will make.
First, Americans want an EV with four wheels. Please stop making three wheeled vehicles and then tell us this is what we want. It is not. If you make an EV with three wheels, be prepared to sell only three of them.
Second, make the car look like a car. We don’t want to drive around in a vehicle that either looks like a bug, is only three feet wide, or looks like you have to wind it up to make it go. Again, if you make a car like this, be prepared to sell only three of them. If you seriously want to sell millions of cars, make it look like a car.
Third, make an EV that is capable of highway speeds. It doesn’t need to go 120+ mph, but 65 mph would be nice. I am one of millions of Americans that travel less than 10 miles to work each day, but I still need to access the highway to get to my job. Please don’t assume that just because we don’t travel far means we don’t use the highways. We do.
Fourth, make the EV affordable. For the average Joe, affordable means between $15,000 and $18,000. There are many new gas powered vehicles that sell in this price range. In my opinion, this is the only barrier separating you from the American consumer. I understand that this is the hardest requirement for an EV. However the average American consumer cannot justify spending the current asking price for an EV that is designed to last about 10 years, with the batteries lasting even less than that. If the technology to mass produce an affordable EV is not available yet, please let us know.
Why do I think this blueprint will make you trillions of dollars? Simple. Because when the other EV companies list a plethora of reasons why they can’t do this, you will be the only one saying “Yes we can.” Good luck.

American 2 [Moderator] 2 years ago
Here here! American Consumer, Robert Overman, Tammy and Bill have been summing it up well.
EV makers need to think like Ford did when he started many years ago. Maybe individual EV companies support isn't big enough but what about combining forces for the greater good? Tesla, Venturi and Universal - how many of your cars will it take to make a dramatic change to the environment? Do you think there are that many wealthy people on the entire planet that are willing to buy them now? Couldn't your resources and ingenuity be combined with others to create something in the 15 - 20k USD range on a mass scale that would effect change sooner? The GM EV-1, Toyota RAV4 EV and the Honda EV were those types of vehicles. They are not coming back but can't the combined brainpower and support of you EV makers create a simlar product for mass production?
I found only one maker - Miles - that is working on a regular looking sedan vehicle. The problem is that they are trying to put a lot of bells and whistles on it making the price tag too high for Everday Joe.
Once again, why can't EV makers concentrate together on one vehicle that can be mass produced and priced for Everyday Joe if you ALL want your Mission statements to be worth anything.

These cars are all great but there are two big problems I see:
1. Either they are too expensive for the average consumer
or
2. They don't have the performance of a regular compact car.
There is a very active community of folks that are converting their own cars to be 100% electric. A typical low-end conversion will cost about $7000, will get you top speeds of 55mph, and a range of about 50 miles. This is exactly what I am doing and will be more than enough for my daily commute and regular errands. If you want to view the project visit www.zerogasoline.com

Backed by an oil exec? Is this not like letting the fox guard the henhouse?
Maybe we will only see the hybrid Aptera version released, if any at all are ever released.
Google "95AH Large Format NiMH battery" and read what happened to the Toyota Rav4 EV battery pack that has patents owned by a familiar Oil company. This perfectly functional battery for a full sized normal EV is not available for such use anymore, even though 600 Toyota Rav4 EVs are still on the road right now. One 2002 model recently sold on EBAY for $89,000

I’m tired of the talk about hybrids. I want a pure battery electric car, but I know we won’t see one built by the car companies we grew up with.
Who does not want EV’s in our driveways:
-Big Automakers, because they, and their dealer networks do not earn significant revenue by selling cars. A look at how large their service departments are (and our out-of-wallet experience with them) shows what’s at stake revenue-wise because EV’s never need service beyond tire changes. EV’s don’t even need brake jobs due to electronic regenerative braking that does most of the work. Their ordinary friction brake pads and rotors thus last the life of the car (as shown on the Toyota electric Rav4).
The large established car companies depend on their service department, like printer companies depend on sales of ink cartridges. So why did Toyota sell the Rav4 instead of leasing and crushing as GM did with the EV1? It’s a mystery, but I came across a blog that mentioned that a Toyota exec at a public speech mistakenly said that the cars would be sold, and so to save face, Toyota reluctantly sold the Rav4. Buyers, however, now post on blogs that they actually had difficulty in getting the Toyota dealer to sell them an electric Rav4 and that they were highly pressured to instead buy a Gas Toyota or a Prius.
-Large oil companies, for obvious reasons. Note they are also major stockholders in auto companies and thus probably have influence over their board of directors.
Business firms exist to make profits, but profits are going to be reduced if EV’s replace the ICE car. Much of our economy is based on the automobile, and its upkeep. Almost every business is related in some way to the car. What will happen to employment if the need to service a car is practically eliminated?
What happens to Midas, Pepboys, Kragen’s, smog check, AMCO, gas stations, Jiffylube, general service repair centers, the manufacturing plants that fabricate repair parts, the UPS people that deliver the parts, the corner deli or Taco Bells frequented by those firm’s workers at lunchtime? What about government agencies that depend on collecting all manner of tax revenue from the above interlinked economy?
If people understand this scenario, then they will understand why they can’t yet buy an EV from the legacy business infrastructure. Only recently can one sniff the scent of a potential EV from upstart EV start-up manufacturers like Tesla (too costly for mass production partly because they hand-solder a battery pack of 6000 Lithium AA sized cells together in series-parallel groups), Aptera, and even the tiny BugE, etc., because a startup company does not need to address the risk that a service-free vehicle will parasitically affect revenue from other parts of its company.
Curiously, Nissan’s CEO has advocated a pure EV but I have a hard time believing he really will build one and that the announcement is mostly PR in nature. After all, Nissan has service centers, too.

To reply to Gubatron's post from 1-11-08,
Did you know that it's possible to build a full sized electric vehicle (EV), freeway capable for more than 100 miles per charge with batteries that last the life of the vehicle, and with air conditioning and power windows, etc. (not the costly Tesla). This is without research into Lithium or other exotic batteries (like the Tesla) but instead with proven Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. This car has been on the road for 10 years now as an embarrassment to the entities that stand against the existence of an electric vehicle: It is the Toyota electric Rav4, and there are about 600 of them still operating in California.
The "battery research required" line we have been told repeatedly is misinformation, which unfortunately, most of us believe.
There is a viable battery already proven to last the life of an electric car and to provide a driving range of more than 100 miles between charges; the "95 AH (Amp Hour) NiMH Large Format" battery. This powers the Rav4 EV.
This battery is no longer sold (why?), but instead a much smaller capacity battery, a Small Format 10 AH NiMH battery is sold to go into the hybrid cars we now drive. This smaller 10 AH capacity battery insures the car still mostly runs on gas. A web search will reveal that a major oil company holds the patents on this battery, and they sued Panasonic for 30 million dollars and had the factory that made them dismantled.
There are many web sites that explore these issues. Google: "Rav4 EV" or "95 AH Large Format NiMH battery”

Thanks for the warning about the ZAP company. It is sad to see such hucksters profit from making endless promises, demanding kid glove treatment because they're "green" and destroying the electric car industry's reputation in the process. These people are not green, they're blacker than crude oil. I feel sorry for the countless investors, dealers and customers who have been duped.

I don't believe that electric cars will make it anytime soon. Not because of technology, but because the big money players are trying to change us over from gas-fuel to hydrogen fuel.
Basically, by going to hydrogen fuel cells, large companies get to keep selling us fuel, keep the profitable gas station set-up, and so on. If they switch us to electric, they are cutting off their own profit-makers, and that would be stupid from a business sense.
In 50 years our children may very well be in the exact same place that we are in - complaining about how much fuel costs! Just the fuel itself will have changed.
The complaint is being raised that electric cars will mess up the electric grid. Add a fee or special charge to cover it, they''ll say. Eventually electric cars won't be cost-efficient enough to use, and hydrogen will win.
I could be wrong. Something in the electronic-car world could maybe, just maybe, force the issue. But I'm not holding my breath.

I have been researching the web about electric cars. I drive 17 miles to work and 17 miles back each day. The total 34 miles is barely within the range of many of the affordable electric cars. I wonder how that range might be effected by battery degradation. That 17 miles includes a long stretch of 60-65 MPH roadway. There is an alternative route that is 29 miles to work and 29 miles back at 35-45 MPH.
I liked the Zap truck mainly due to it's lower weight which should translate to better performance, and because of the optional solar panel charger. The car could recharge during the day sitting in the parking lot. I am curious about their current financial circumstances.
I also liked the Myers Motors offering (except for the price). I have read a small amount about their "Raven" model.
An electric motorcycle or scooter might work if there was some provision for bad weather like a canopy (BugE).
When might we get an updated version of this article?

Recent oil profits have given our friendly "cartel" more money than God has. What will they do with it? How about buying emerging technology? Buy the whole (privately held) company. Give them an "offer they can't refuse". If the company is public, buying only 6% of the outstanding shares means they have to let you onto their board, where you can raise hell. Activist Investors are presently doing this right now to all manner of companies. Usually they break them up and sell the entities, leaving with profits and a trail of devastation. They call this a "value recovery plan", and it's likely happening at a company near you. In any event, a firm with oil interests in mind could stop a small company in its tracks, for reasons other than "value recovery".
I worry when I see recent ads by an oil company on Public TV ads indicating interest in Lithium Batteries for "Hybrid Electric Vehicles" (not, of course, battery electric vehicles). What else do they intend to buy?
Which is why I think the Chinese is the best hope for EVs. They've got scillions of people who will soon climb into the middle class, and they need cars. Those cars are going to be electric in many cases because, starting from scratch, China will not lock themselves to petroleum like we have. I plan to buy the Chinese made highway speed Vespa style scooter, the XM-3500Li that is for sale right now in America. Google it. I may also buy the Miles Highway Speed Sedan EV, (which looks like a real car! Google it and see!) if it shows up for sale here. The Chinese are also making their own LiFePO4 Lithium large format batteries: Thunder Sky brand. Perfect for EVs. And Chevron can't stop them like they did with the 95 AH Large Format NiMH battery that Panasonic briefly built, batteries still powering RAV4 EVs 10 years and 100,000 plus miles later as an embarrassment and Myth Buster to the deniers of the EV who keep spouting misinformation "battery research required". I don't think any Western Business, manufacturing based or petroleum based, no matter how large, will be able to stop China. China is independent. And as unpatriotic as it sounds, I sadly cheer on China....at least for EV's and batteries....because America won't sell them to me.

You can't buy one! Be real. The oil companies own the U.S. government and U.S. government policy is all geared around keeping the price of oil going higher and higher.
Since an electric car goes against higher oil prices, you can't actually buy one!

I've seen, on a couple of TV magazine shows, where relatively inexperienced individuals have transformed old, used American cars that had blown gas engines into electric cars for something considerably less than ten thousand dollars.
I don't understand why these individuals and many more like them aren't doing this and selling them to the general public. I'll bet if you parked say a used, converted Chevy Cavalier on the street or in a parking lot with a sign on it saying "For Sale, Electric Car Conversion," it would create tremendous attention and quite a few sales. I can see used car lots full of converted cars.
Take a used car, convert it to electric, put it into excellent mechanical shape, and sell it to average people for a truly reasonable price. What a concept!

I wonder what the "Porteon" looks like?
It looks like "Fly Bo", "Kurrent" and "Porteon" are the way to go.
Others are too expensive, considering you're buying an EV to save Gasoline. If this will be the price to pay for an EV in the Future then it's time we learn to build one.
I found a great site about EVs, visit how to build an electric car

We have been paying a huge amount of money for decades when WE BUY GAS for R&D. First, why do we pay for someone's business down the road. We I was in business, my R&D came from MY profits. I didn't ask MY CUSTOMERS to give me money to research better ways to do business. It was my investment and if it was worth it, I made the profits.
Electric Cars have been on the drawing tables for decades. Why does the USA have to wait 'til another country is close to have a true electric car before we introduce ours. The USA used to be the leaders not the followers.
I don't get it????????????

O.K. GM, FORD, AND CHRYSLER, THE WAY I SEE IT IS WE ALL HAVE TO WAIT ABOUT TWO MORE YEARS FOR YOUR BIG COME BACKS AND THEN THE PRICE IS GOING TO BE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 36000.00 AND 96000.00 .. DON'T GUESS YOU'VE BEEN KEEPING THE TV ON DURING THE NEWS BUT YOU'RE IN A MELL OF A HESS FOR THE SAME REASON WE ARE ( OIL ), I COUDN'T AFFORD YOUR 36000.00 GAS GUSSLER WHEN TIMES WERE GOOD AND I'M IN LOWER MIDDLE CLASS INCOME LEVEL WHERE I THINK MOST AMERICAN'S ARE. MY POINT IS BRING BACK THOSE CARS LIKE THE PONTIAC FIERO ( SUPER FUN CAR TO DRIVE ) WE KNOW YOU MADE AN ELECTRIC ONE . YOU SURLY STILL HAVE THE MOLD , BRING IT BACK AND PUT THAT HIGH DOLLAR BATTERY YOU BOUGHT FROM THOSE PEOPLE IN MASS. FOR YOUR VOLT THAT SHOULD BE GETTING OVER 100 MILES PER CHARGE INSTEAD OF 40. BUT I HERE YOU REFUSED TO USE THEIR SOFTWARE , BUT THEN YOU COUDN'T CALL IT , G.M. BIG OIL MADE YOU BIG AND BIG OIL WILL TAKE YOU DOWN . IN THE MEAN TIME I'LL KEEP DRIVING MY 2000.00 18 MPG OLD TRUCK AND IN TWO YEARS I HOPE TO BE DRIVING A NEW BRAND OF SOMETHING THAT IS PURE ELECTRIC THAT GETS OVER 100 MILES PER CHARGE AND MAX SPEED OF ABOUT 60 TO 70 MPH . YOU GUYS BETTER GET OUT IN THE SUNLIGHT AND WAKE UP ,SIMPLE LITTLE OLD ME HAS THE KNOW HOW TO BUILD THIS CAR IN MY BACK YARD BY MY SELF . All you poor people. You're all going to have to ride bicycles and horses soon. There is just no future in the electric car. Except for the rich. Why ? Because from what i've read, there's just not enough lithium for the entire world fleet on this planet. About only 2%. Back to the drawing board.

It's time we demand that US auto manufactures build a true EV not a hybrid. These new offerings are designed to continue our dependence on fossil fuels.
Lithium is the short term battery solution however by diverting some of that mega defense budget into current civilian R&D that has already working on viable substitutes for the lithium battery. With increased funding the electric storage problem could be on the market within a year.
The only way we will move away from the oil and auto barons hold on us is to elect representative to state and federal government that will vote in favor of the people not their rich and corporate supporters.
The people of the US are continually having to bail out the US auto makers. It's time we become the majority owners of these companies. That we demand they produce what we want and need, not new body types of the same vehicles that will continue our dependence on oil or hydrogen filling station. Not the programmed failure of engine parts and continual fuel changes.
The EV takes away the after sales profits from planned part failures and continual fluid changes.
We the people of the US need to stop purchasing fossil fuel vehicle. There are alternatives if their sales go up maybe Ford, GM will get the message. No EV's no sales. The Chevy Volt is GM's attempt to make the car owner feel good about helping the environment, when in reality they are driving an electirc assisted internal combustion engine designed to continue the dependence on fossil fuels and filling stations.
The EV is a viable solution and with new types of batteries and flexible solar materials the EV would be able to charge while you are driving or parked in an open parking lot. However if the big 3 auto makers refuse to provide us with a true EV we need to stop public financial support for these corporation and fund new start up that have viable product but need help with the expense of mass production and distribution.
The flexible solar panels and new batteries are reality they just need financial support to work out the mass production details.
We may have to force the Big 3 auto makers to forego it's 2-3 hundred percent new product profit on the lithium battery and the initial EV production.
If we the US people are going to support the re-tooling of their plants to produce the cars of the future they need to truly free of fossil fuels.
Therefore if it is not a EV or BEV DON'T BUY IT. The only way it will happen is if we let our money do the talking.
We also need to write the auto executive, and state and federal government representative so they know why we aren't purchasing. Otherwise the spin doctor will blame it on everything except the people want a true EV and to be free of the high cost of driving an automobile and its effect on the environment.
In the long term we also need to re-build our mass transit system that was disseminated by the oil and auto barons in order to force us into buying cars and building highways. Rapid transit trains are in use in every country but ours. In places where the railways tracks are still in place rapid transport of people need to be available as an alternate means of travel.

Dearest one,
My name is Henry Tigana from Sierra Leonian. I am 20 years old and a student. Please I would like you to assist me as urgent as you can, before they kill me.My father is a wealthy cocoa merchant.Trouble began early last two year when my father's associates began suspecting that my father is not giving proper accounts of all the tonnes of cocoa being cultivated by local farmersn in some villages.
This mistrust deepens between Oct-Sept, 2005 when they discovered avery large some of money my father deposited with a Bank here in ABIDJAN-COTE D'IVOIRE (FORMALLY IVORY COAST in West Africa. As a result of this discovery and the envy on the money he was poisioned by his associates. At his hospital bed ,he revealed to me the reasons of his sickness and directed me where to get the documents of the said deposit which he made on my name as the next of kin, being the only child.
He advised me that in case he die, that I should not stay in this country Sierre Leone because his associates will equally kill me hence my mother had died five years ago of breast cancer.
He also instructed that if he dies, I should look for a foreign partner who will help me to transfer the money out of this place (Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire), to his account and the person will help me to invest the money in that country. Based on this, I had to contact you bearing in mind that you will be humane enough to protect my life. My father finally died on the 5th of june,2006 and since then, I was out of school and went into hiding because of my father's asociates. All the relevant documents of the $8.000,000..(Eight Million United States Dollars) that was deposited in a Commercial Bank by my late father, are with me now.
I will give you 20% of the total money, if you can help me transferring it into your Account, for onward investment in your country. Please contact me immediately with the above Email address and inc
lude your telephone and Fax numbers to enable me send you all necessar documents as regards the money before they kill me. It is a risk free transaction.
I'm waiting for your urgent reply.

An interesting and informative article along with some great comments.
The thing is that many of these vehicles are not yet ready for prime time. What do I mean? Well check out the web sites suggested, while some are great concepts and wonderful ideas most are not yet for sale.
The offerings from the major manufacturers seem to be the same as always... available sometime in the future. Or extremely overpriced with limited range. It "feels" like they are just playing the game of Green to lure more people into their showrooms where they can sell you something else.
Yes there are some vehicles that will travel at 35 miles per hour that are ready now, but this is not practical for many people. A minimum of 50 mph would be needed and a range someplace in the 60 mile range would be practical.
The people that would buy a car like that have children and need a place for them to sit safely and a place for their "stuff". In addition because I live in the Northeast the car needs to be enclosed and have heat!
So far the only sensible option open to most is to convert an existing gas powered vehicle to electric. But this is a tremendous commitment and beyond the scope of many.
I agree with DJ Adams..... why don't any of the EV companies build reasonably priced EV Conversions so that average people can purchase regular cars?
I could see a company making conversions making a tremendous amount of money selling what people are asking for.
The next step is easy.... ask your EV customers to share their experiences with others. Why? There has been a real lack of information from the folks that actually drive EV cars. Or am I just missing it?
By letting potential customers know about your customers EV experience, how they save money, the people that stop them to ask about their cars and much more.
What will this accomplish? Simple you will become a major player in the EV business. (this means you will make a lot of money) You will also silence many of the unfounded cynicism by critics.
"Where can I buy one of those?" will be all you will here.
Oh yeah.... Where can I buy one of those?

I've been closely following electric car news for years, and it has never changed much. New products are always just over the horizon. These small companies are all looking for venture capital. They were having problems before, and with the economic bust, most of them will unfortunately just evaporate. Some of them are only vapor anyway.
The reason the big manufacturers are getting into the game is to scare off the venture capital from these potential competitors so they will have the field to themselves if they ever decide to actually make an electric car. No doubt they will eventually build electric cars. Any product they make will of course be a rather dull but solid design by committee, not the brilliant but perhaps risky designs like some seen here.
Whatever it is, if any company has a viable electric car that is actually for sale, I'll buy one right away. By viable, I mean available for delivery, MSRP of less than $30,000, cruising speed of 65 mph, and range of 100+ miles. As far as I can tell, none of the cars featured here meet all those criteria.

The newest generation of electric cars is a good match for the current generation of gas and/or diesel powered cars. The development is fast. With newest generation of Lio-Ion batteries and powerful electric motors these cars can be used for daily people and goods transports, have enough range and are faster than their fossil powered brothers.

I think you are missing another Swiss manufacturer. It is based in the village of Zermatt. This village is famous with its all-year snow ski tracks at high altitude, but it is really amazing with its all-electric transport. Gasoline cards are not allowed in this village. Even police cars and public transport buses are electric ones! If someone is interested, I could send pictures of different electric cars taken in this village. I think this village is a bright example of what the future of transportation could be. The air is clean and you can really feel the silence - the missing noise, which combustion engine cars produce in any other place.

These cars are not highway-capable, so they seem being not too practical outside villages or living areas. They use lead acid batteries and obviously do not have some significant range. An empty battery is usually replaced in one of the garages there. It takes 2-3 minutes to change the battery. It could also be recharged on-board. No idea what is the price, but they sell the cars. And the cars have registration plates. I saw different versions - family car, small truck, taxi, police car and even something like a small lorry! Take a look at the village's web-cams and you will see some of these cars. http://bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/e/web-cam/zermatt3...

How can we get FORD, with all their troubles, to bring their TH!NK back home. I'm sure they have factory space to get it up and rolling! You'd think, they'd be eager to get something in production to beat Tesla and the others to the real market for electric cars. A model "T" for the new age. Perhaps, we just let Ford fail, and someone else will grab up their factory space if no one at Ford has their originator's vision.
The TH!NK seems to be the only reasonable choice here for a real family car.

You've not read much. There are other technologies like ultracapacitors and hydrogen fuel cells, just to name a couple. The future of the automobile will be dominated with electric cars like the Tesla Roadster, Dodge ZEO and the Obvio 828e - cars that go relatively fast and far. The ICE kings will die or evolve.

I'm excited to see so many companies working on such an important technology, and I'm also glad to see a mid-range cars and not only cars taht are $70K+... the only drawback for me is that most of these cars are running lithium-ion battery. There really is enough consumer demand that the government should be forcing Chevron to lease out the high powered NiMH batteries. I just finished reading a really good introductory book about Electric Cars titled "Two Cents Per Mile" by Nevres Cefp. It talks about different battery types a little, but in general is an all-around great introduction to the history and the technical specification of EVs... if you have the time I would definitely recommend it. It's pretty hard to find in bookstores, but its the best resource I've found on the topic, and it was published this year so it is up to date. You can get it at Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Two-Cents-per-Mile-Presid...
It's really amazing how much better electric vehicles could be with battery technology which is currently in the hands of oil companies.

Lets not forgot Goss132. The little known EV company based in Northern Florida. They 'claim' to have their EV's at a cost of roughly 22,000. Yes... Thats right. I said 22,000. Now THAT is an EV worth looking at. The only trouble is their website is weak on imagery. Perhaps on purpose?? The website www.goss132.com is fairly simple but I like it so far.
I've read it's about the size of a Camry which is alot more preferred versus the rest of these clown
cars. Hope they get them to market soon.

it's nice to see a new collection of different cars. But they are too expensive for me, but something like that, it give me some energy to focus in some sciencefiction direction. Maybe sciencefiction is the real future to believe!!!
In few words excellent

Why are all the EVs weird looking and tiny??? Why can't someone put an electric engine in a car I would actually want to buy, like a Subaru Forester, Volvo Cross Country, or mid-size SUV? These toys can't be safe to drive, especially when you are sandwiched between a truck and an expedition. Carmakers, be serious please, and you will attract serious buyers.

1) Can someone explain to me this comment "electric car will be solutions to our environment, to keep green". How are they charged? They are plugged in, right? Here we get 99% of our electricity from coal-fired generating plants--as do many places. The greens don't want us to build nuclear plants or hydroelectric dams, so what good is an electric car if I have to plug it into a coal-fired electric grid? Wind and solar are impractical and expensive and wind has huge environmental problems of its own.(Wind also relies heavily on coal plants to keep the grid stable.) So other than being incredibly small where is the "carbon" (or the "green") advantage? Could I not do the same with a petrol-fired mini car?
2) How do these work when it between (say) -10°C and -30°C? How good are the heaters and do they get less distance when it is cold? How are they in snow?
Thanks for the enlightenment.

We're glad that people are still commenting on this story a year after it was published. Myers Motors has a quick update. We started taking preproduction reservations for our new 2-passenger model, the Duo, which will come out later in 2010. The Duo has a 60-mile range with upgrades available to extend the range to up to 100 miles, and it will cost less than our original NmG. Please check our website at www.myersmotors.com to see pictures and get more details.

What an awesome product. I definitely think it's the wave of future. One question: after we lessen our dependency on oil, how will we lessen our dependency on energy and electricity to charge these things? Solar energy is the answer, and companies like ENVISION SOLAR are going to revolutionize the way people think and charge their life, starting with automobile. Envision is committed to provide solar power charging stations in PARKING LOTS that are most convenient.
See some plans in these short videos.....http://envisionsolar.com/video/

I don't understand why these individuals and many more like them aren't doing this and selling them to the general public. I'll bet if you parked say a used, converted Chevy Cavalier on the street or in a parking lot with a sign on it saying "For Sale, Electric Car Conversion," it would create tremendous attention and quite a few sales. I can see used car lots full of converted cars.
