How to build your own wind turbine workshop, 25-28 September 2009.

In this intensive, four-day, hands-on workshop, 10 participants have learned how to make a quiet, efficient, and durable wind turbine from scratch.

All profit of this workshop will be devoted to a project that will set up electricity access for the rural poor of Mali, Africa, in a sustainable and cost-effective manner (these wind turbines). Detailed information about this project can be found on the following link: Mali Project

Working together, we have completed and erected a 3 meter diameter, 1 kW wind turbine. The turbine is designed to charge a 48 volt battery system. The wind turbine is designed by Hugh Piggott (http://www.scoraigwind.com).

On the one side it is an excellent opportunity for participants to learn a variety of skills. The turbine we have build implies skills in welding (electrode and mig) and other metal work (like flame cutting, making threads, inserting helicoils), wood handling, resin casting and electrical work like winding copper coils and soldering.

On the other side, we have learned and gained insight how the relationship between various components (for instance the size of permanent magnets, the amount of windings of the copper coils, the blade design) can lead to a beautifull machine that is capable of operating and producing electricity by the environment conditions by itself.

Blade carving:

The blades are made from wood and are cutt with basic tools like a hand saw, chisel and hamer and drawknifes.
