The ZCV-4: Bulgaria Joins the Electric Revolution
veebruar 14, 2010 · Lisa kommentaar

After watching his team Chelsea beating London rivals Arsenal and being adored by a large group of Bulgarian emigrants in the English capital, Borisov shocked his audience by announcing that there will soon be a Bulgarian made electric vehicle.

The ZCV-4 will carry 4-people, and their batteries will last 300 to 600 kilometers with a maximum speed of 110 km per hour. According to local Bulgarian media an electric two-seater sports car, vans and buses will also be developed.

UK investment fund Quorus Ventures, experts in new markets in Europe as well as market development were reported to be the initiators of the project and the Stara Zagora municipality has already announced that Mayor, Svetlin Tanchev, will meet British experts from the company over the plans for the factory in the coming days. Speedy work!

With this giant step Borisov joined the major world leaders, US President Barack Obama and his great friend German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in the electric vehicle revolution: Obama announced in late 2009 that USD 2,4 B will be invested in electric cars and hybrid technology projects in the US, while Merkel followed this by giving EUR 500 M to electric vehicle development and stating that she wants to see 1 million such cars on the German roads by 2020.

In the earliest days of the automobile in the late nineteenth century, many kinds of cars competed with each other – steam, battery, and internal combustion engine (ICE). The gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines won the competition with the success of the Model T, which first rolled off of the assembly line in 1908. One hundred years later, competition is again stirring.

The age of electric vehicles is upon us. The Toyota Prius, a hybrid-electric vehicle first introduced in Japan in 1997, marked an initial breakthrough and much more innovation is on the way, led by General Motors’ plug-in hybrid vehicle, the Chevy Volt, at the end of 2010. While the Prius is a normal ICE automobile with a small motor, the Volt will be an electric vehicle with an engine alongside.

It is true that electric cars have often come up against press and public ridicule, and the latest global re-call on Monday by Toyota of about 436 000 hybrid vehicles worldwide, including its latest Prius model, to fix brake problems only adds to the doubters’ bows. The truth is, however, that with global warming becoming an ever increasing worry, the electric car is the only way ahead.

The key to climate change control lies in improved technology and one of the most exciting developments on the horizon in this regard is the new generation of electric automobiles, which Bulgaria will now be a part of.

The new age of the electric vehicle exemplifies the powerful opportunities that we can grasp as we make our way from the unsustainable fossil-fuel age to a new age of sustainable technologies. With last weeks 5-year ban proposal on GM crops and this excellent electric deal let us hope that Boyko keeps to his agenda and supplies Bulgaria with a new age too.
