Renault urged to rethink Zoe name

Renault could soon find itself facing one of the most bizarre legal challenges in automotive history. A 23-year-old woman from Paris called Zoe Renault has warned the French maker it may face court action if it calls its electric supermini Zoe, as planned.

Ms Renault has hired a law firm to act on her behalf, though the company is also representing a host of other women called Zoe with the same concern.

A formal letter has been drafted to the carmaker by the law firm, petitioning it to change the electric car's name. The letter claims it is an 'attack on the rights' of women named Zoe.

Renault is reported to be considering dropping the 'Zoe ZE' tag. The car is still a concept, though the production model will hit UK roads in 2012. It's possible the showroom car adopt a new name.

Zoe means 'life' in Greek, and ZE stands for 'zero emissions'. Talking to Le Parisien newspaper, Ms Renault claimed she could not cope with hearing phrases like 'we need to get Zoe overhauled'.
