Wind turbine information
These wind turbines have direct drive, permanent magnet, axial flux generators based on the design of Hugh Piggott. They have more than 3 decades track record of being cost effective to manufacture with relative simple tools and basic materials. The blades are made from wood, the generator is build by coiling copper wires and a relative easy steel robust frame is welded together. The rotor rotates by using a wheel hub of an automobile or trailer. These turbines have proved to be reliable and robust, some of them standing almost 20 years in harsh environments such as in Northern Scotland. The rotor diameter, depending on the specific design, varies between the 1.8 and 4.2 [m] that will approximately deliver respectively between the 0.6 and 3 kW DC power to charge 12-48 V battery banks. The materials are almost all locally available and therefore the turbine, should it break down, is easy to repair.
